COLOR STORY

Sunset in Bend, Oregon

Sunsets are Mother Nature’s evening song. They are a Call To Prayer. They are so dynamic and vibrant and lush that we stop. We look. We gaze in wonder. It doesn’t matter where you are- New York City, Paris, Reykjavik, Manchester, Cleveland....Every city, every town and every little village will on occasion, pull up its skirts and reveal a riotous petticoat of delicious colors. I spent months trying to recreate a photo I took of a particularly gorgeous sunset in Bend, Oregon. Bend is a town of contradictions. It is High Mountain Desert country. There are huge Ponderosa trees, offering the kind of green that is so prevalent in the Pacific Northwest. The ground however, is covered in dusty scarlet rocks. If cities were astrological signs, Bend would be a Gemini. I did my best but, I finally realized that as a mere mortal, I could never duplicate the magnificence of the layered hues of a rich sunset. I did however, get pretty damned close. I hope that you can see the nuance, the dye upon dye and the punch in these colors. But more than that, the joy in carrying the sunset along with you- most especially on those gray and gloomy day
